Help Save Our Oceans
The launch of our new exhibit, Helmerich Sea Lion Cove, is the perfect opportunity to learn about ocean conservation! Though the Tulsa Zoo is not near an ocean, choices we ALL make everyday can have a great impact on the conditions threatening sea lions and other marine life.
When humans catch fish faster than the fish can reproduce, vast regions of ocean are left depleted of prey for several marine species, including the sea lion. One way you can help is by making environmentally responsible seafood choices. Why does that matter? Because what we eat - and fish for - impacts what's available to marine predators, and can affect the ecosystems those animals live in.
Best Seafood Choices
Below are just a few options of seafood that is abundant, well-managed, and caught or farmed in environmentally friendly ways:
Dungeness, Kona, or Stone Crab (NOT King Crab)
Halibut (Pacific, U.S.)
Striped Bass (Farmed or Wild Caught)
Tilapia (U.S. Farmed)
Seafood to Avoid
Try an alternative to the fish listed below. The methods of farming or catching these fish harm other marine life and/or the environment.
Caviar and Sturgeon (Imported Wild-caught)
Imported Pacific Cod
King Crab (imported)
Crawfish (Imported Farmed)
Grouper (U.S. Atlantic)
Halibut (Atlantic or California)
